The COPE programs (also called Strengthening Communities) aims to support individuals, families and communities to build community capacity for addressing issues which impact their lives.

The programs prioritise marginalised groups and communities including:

  • People living with disabilities or mental illness
  • Indigenous communities
  • Culturally and linguistically diverse communities
  • Young people at risk
  • Communities experiencing economic hardship
  • Those affected by violence.

The programs do this by providing a range of short and medium term community education and development programs in consultation with health and community services. Strengthening Communities holds consultations with consumers of services and service providers, and uses these to shape the development of new projects. The programs use a combination of individual and community-oriented approaches including life skills training, skills for community capacity building and peer education programs.

Our focus is to help existing groups increase their skills, knowledge and confidence, in order to enhance their ongoing capacity to support one another and their community.
